Silent Letters

Have you guys ever wondered why we have silent letters? Why couldn't we just form the words without the letter in the first place. Some of them just don't make sense to me. For example, why the K in front of "know"? I mean I guess it could mistakenly be pronounced like now, but I feel that "noe" would have worked just as well. It bothers me when people pronounce silent letters. Such as the S sound at the end of Illinois. Today in class, my teacher (who by the way, has an eerie resemblance to Creed from the Office) found it imperative that he pronounced all the H's in words such as "what", "why", and all those similar. Made me wonder.

Update: Katt Williams is wondering the same shit.
